SEMAT supports a process to refound software engineering based on a solid theory, proven principles and best practices that:

  • Include a kernel of widely-agreed elements, extensible for specific uses
  • Addresses both technology and people issues
  • Are supported by industry, academia, researchers and users
  • Support extension in the face of changing requirements and technology

Practice Area

Leaders: Paul McMahon (PEM Systems) and Ian Spence (IJI)

In this area current projects are writing Essence User Guide, developing Practice Development Guide, building Practice Library and developing open source tools.

Education Area

Leaders: Cecile Peraire (Carnegie Mellon University)

This area develops curriculum and course materials and textbooks that leverage Essence in software engineering education for universities and industry.

The area includes members from a number of universities and institutes world-wide, including: Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley, Free University of Bozen Bolzano, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, University of Duisburg-Essen, University of Oslo, Waseda University and National Institute of Informatics, Wits University Johannesburg and more.

Theory Area

Leaders: Michael Goedicke (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Pontus Johnson (KTH – Royal Institute of Technology)

This area builds awareness of the importance of theory in the software engineering community and develops the theory based on Essence kernel and  language.  The series of workshops held under the title SEMAT Workshop on
a General Theory of Software Engineering (GTSE) are a key component in such awareness building.
The area also conducts practice-specific research.

Community Area

Leaders: June Sung Park (KAIST)

This area currently works on establishing a legal entity for SEMAT, establishing more regional chapters of SEMAT. building a multichannel, interactive online community of SEMAT, and publishing articles on Essence in journals of large audiences such as CACM and IEEE Software.
